Choosing A Bolt Seal
Industry Compliance
The new ISO 17712:2010 standard for bolt seals was effective on March 1, 2012. The new guideline requires bolt seals to have a minimum dimension on the bolt head and locking mechanism of 18mm.
Our Premium MS-B7 series bolt seals (8 mm diameter) meet the ISO 17712:2010 standard for High Security, as required by C-TPAT. Because the new bolt seal standard offers improved security performance, we recommend this product for shipments which cross international borders.
Our Standard bolt seals (7 mm diameter) only comply with the prior ISO standard (ISO 17712:2006) for High Security. Some customers are still using this product for domestic shipments or applications where security needs are lower.
All of our bolt seals are produced in C-TPAT facilities.
Documentation & Accountability
All of the seals have unique serial numbers. Record the serial number for added security and accountability. Our bolt seals are also offered in multiple colors, which allows for color coding.
Added Security and Compatibility
All of our bolt seals include an anti-spin feature, which provides added security to prevent unauthorized entry. They also have a longer operational length which provides added clearance (and convenience) for bolt cutter access to cut the bolt for removal.
Customized bolt seals provide added security. The stock bolt seals (red, blue, yellow) can be customized by imprinting the bolt only. Or we have yellow bolt seals which can be customized on the bolt and lock.
For added security, if the container/trailer has two hinged doors (each with a keeper bar and hasp), secure both doors with a bolt seal on each door.
For added security on trailer doors, other options include:
- DualGuard MS-C5B9 (shown on this page): a combination cable seal and bolt seal which secures both doors. The cable provides added security by wrapping around the keeper bars on the doors. The bolt secures one of the door latches. Both cable and bolt are ISO-rated. This seal requires two cuts to fully remove, which provides added security.
- Navaloop BC-03 (shown on this page): a combination bolt seal and cable seal which can secure both doors. The cable provides added security by wrapping it around the keeper bars on the doors. The bolt is ISO-rated, but the cable is not.
- Cable Seals: available in larger diameters and longer lengths to wrap around the keeper bars on the doors. Sometimes used in addition to or as a substitute for a bolt seal. Cables diameters of 3.5mm or higher are ISO-rated and C-TPAT compliant.
- Cargo Door Labels: tamper evident labels which are affixed to the doors to span the door seams. Usually used in addition to the door locking mechanism.
- Barrier Seals: Heavy duty metal brackets which latch the two doors together. This is the most secure door locking mechanism and is typically used for high value shipments.

Both the bolt and lock have matching serial numbers, which are laser etched into the plastic covering.

The bolt is inserted into the locking mechanism, where the metal bolt snaps into place within the metal locking cylinder.
The metal bolt and metal locking cylinder are encased in plastic, which is designed to show signs of tampering. If attacked with a heat source, the plastic will discolor and/or melt.
Our bolt seal designs include an anti-spin feature to minimize tampering.
Security Options
Installation Instructions
- Insert the bolt in the latch hole.
- Before locking:
- Rotate the locking mechanism and bolt until the matching serial numbers are visible and aligned on the same side.
- Align the square end of the bolt to fit into the square hole in the lock. Loosely insert the bolt into the lock to assure proper alignment. Any misalignment will make it more difficult to lock.
- Push the bolt into the locking mechanism until it snaps.
- Pull on the bolt & lock to confirm the locking mechanism is fully engaged.
- A bolt cutter is required to remove the bolt seal. Wear safety glasses when removing.
Accommodating Larger Latch Holes
The maximum latch hole size is shown in the specifications. For larger hole openings, add heavy duty metallic washers (with minimum .4 inch diameter hole) on one or both ends of the bolt seal. The outside diameter of the washer should be at least .25 inch larger than the latch opening.
Before engaging the locking mechanism, confirm there will be ample room to remove the bolt with a bolt cutter.

The implementation date of ISO17712:2010 was March 1, 2012. However, the tamper evident testing portion of the standard (clause 6) is not complete and will be delayed. A new implementation date for the tamper evident testing has not been published. For more info on the ISO standard, click on the link below:
The new standard is intended to improve the security of bolt seals. Suppliers must provide documentation that their seals meet the enhanced construction specifications and received a 'PASS' on the tamper evident performance testing.
The construction specifications are finalized. We can certify that our MS-B5 and MS-B7 series bolt seals meet the new current standards for ISO 17712:2010(E), clause 4.4.3. The major change in the new construction specification is to make the steel bolt head and locking mechanism a minimum of 18mm wide (formerly was 17mm).
The structural testing aspects of ISO 17712 did not change in the new standard. These requirements are listed in clause 5 of the ISO standard. We can certify that our MS-B5 and MS-B7 bolt seals meet the current standards for ISO 17712:2010 (E), clause 5.
However, the new ISO standard for tamper evident testing (clause 6) is not finalized. Therefore, at this time, we can only certify the MS-B5 and MS-B7 bolt seals meet the portion of ISO 17712:2010 which is final. When the tamper evident testing requirements in the standard are finalized, we will complete any additional testing to certify that the bolt seals meet the tamper evident testing too.
While the new standard is voluntary, failure to comply could result in shipment delays based on C-TPAT procedures.
Although the new ISO standard is not fully complete, the new standard has tangible security improvements to the bolt seal design. Therefore, customers who want improved security should consider the new product standards, especially for cross border shipments.

These bolt seals (7mm diameter steel) are C-TPAT compliant for an earlier version of the ISO-standard and pass the testing requirements of ISO/PAS 17712:2006.

Our DualGuard seals include a 5mm cable seal and 9mm bolt seal in a unitized construction. Both the cable and bolt seal are both C-TPAT compliant and meet the new design and construction standards of ISO17712:2010, which provides improved security.
